Labmeeting recently opened its doors, and the community has grown. We think it’s time to start blogging. We want to keep you, our blog, updated on what’s going on at Labmeeting and the world of life science research. We’re especially interested in how the internet (specifically, its capacity to increase information exchange) can improve scientific research. Labmeeting’s mission is to make science easier.
How do we do that?
We hope to make it easier to search, share, and organize your library of papers. We know from experience that scientists have thousands of papers on their desktop that they get by searching PubMed or by receiving them in their inboxes. The problem for most people is that these thousands of PDFs are labeled with random names (we remember the days when we’d try to pack in as much information as possible into a file name) and are stored in random folders (we remember the days when we’d try to pack in as much information as possible into a folder name, too. They were the same days). Labmeeting makes an “inbox” for your papers. Upload all of your files, and they are automatically parsed and matched to bibliographic records. Now you have a web-based collection where you can take notes on papers, search, view, and share them with colleagues. It’s private, unless you want to share it, and it’s secure (it’s backed up so we guarantee you won’t lose it). We’re all about unlimited storage on the cloud. That means you can upload as many papers as you want, and continue adding to your collection as colleagues recommend you papers. It also means you can access your collection from any computer. Just login to www.labmeeting.com.
Where do we go from here?
Besides making an individual researcher’s life easier, we aim to help scientists work with their labmates. Labs have also been using the group functionality, including the group Documents section which lets groups put up files for everyone in lab to see. We’re constantly working on these features, and others. Comments, suggestions, and feedback are always welcome: just shoot us an email at contact@labmeeting.com.
